Project Description: The unpaved roads in southern Spain generate dust in the summer and erode during the rainy season. The proactive regional government selected Terratech to engineer a solution to improve local infrastructure and implement an effective method of erosion and dust control. The project was designed to showcase polymer road building technology and its ability to create durable and abrasion resistant roads.
Project Objectives: Due to the increasingly stringent European Union regulations on particulate release and the ongoing low water drought conditions, the municipality needed to address both dust generation and erosion control issues simultaneously. Terratech staff evaluated the soil profile and traffic volume to determine the proper topical polymer dosage required to bind the soil in place, seal the surface and lock in particulates creating a dust free, durable, low maintenance road. The unpaved roads were topically treated with T-PRO® 500 polymer. Terratech products were chosen as the only alternative capable of creating roads with significant bearing capacity strength and erosion resistance that were both inexpensive and easy to install. Recent review of the test sections, after the wettest winter season in nearly a century, has shown that the polymer treated roads are still performing very well. The wear course is hard and shows very little deterioration.
Equipment Used: Water truck with a Pressurized Spray Bar.
Application Specifications: All sections sealed with a topical seal coat at a coverage rate of 100 ft²/gal.
Maintenance Requirements: Removal of loose material from shoulder surface and topical re-application of polymer seal coat at a coverage rate of 120 ft²/gal.
